Hinchingbrooke SchoolSpecialism: MathsPosition: Head of MathsMaths Department

Before entering teaching I provided IT consultancy services into schools and public sector organisations. During my 8 years working in business I had numerous managerial roles as well as studying for a Certificate in Management with the Open University.

Having always had a passion for learning (and teaching) I re-trained and obtained a first class Maths degree and ITT via the graduate teaching program in Nottingham. During my studies I taught at the Nottingham Emmanuel School before relocating to Cambridgeshire. I held a TLR for intervention at St Peter’s School and then moved on to become an Assistant Head of Department at Sandy Upper School. In February 2014 I was successfully offered my current job as a Head of Department at Hinchingbrooke School. I have experience in teaching KS3, KS4 and KS5 as well as a growing interest in my children’s KS1 curriculum.

The Mathematics department has gone through a lot of changes in recent years and since my appointment I have been able to completely re-structure the leadership of the department. Much of my work has been about ensuring robust systems for both staff and students to improve the overall effectiveness of the Maths department. An important aspect has been deploying staff according to their strengths whilst also ensuring that there is a collaborative and clear objective about how we undertake the many changes in the current Maths curriculum.

As part of this I have introduced targeted intervention strands that have been successful in raising the attainment of examination cohorts. Currently one of our weekly scheme caters for 130 of our 300 year 11 students.
